The aim of this unit is to provide Learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to use digital devices.

LO1 Understand how to use a variety of devices
Devices that can be used to access the internet include but are not limited to computers, phones, smart devices, wearable devices, gaming consoles, e-readers, TVs, streaming devices, car systems, security systems, public access devices, and mesh network devices.
Software and hardware: Hardware: physical components, functionality, physical interactions
- Software: programs and instructions, virtual components, flexibility, customisation, abstract concepts
- Software and hardware working together
Commonly used operating systems: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Chrome OS, watchOS, tvOS.
Importance of a device’s storage space: data storage, system performance, application installations, media storage and playback, data backup and recovery, productivity and creativity, office access and mobility, gaming and entertainment, flexibility and scalability.
LO2 Be able to use a range of digital devices
Updating a digital device: access appropriate settings, software updates, operating system updates, application updates, other devices, backing up data, stable internet, and device power.
Installing a program or application: installing on a computer, installing on a device, downloading files, installing files, installing wizards, ensuring it has been successful, app stores, permissions.
Accessing accessibility settings: computers, smart devices, visual (text size, magnification, colour contrast, screen reader, voice-over, talk back), auditory (closed captions, audio descriptors), motor and physical (switch control, assistive touch, touch accommodations), cognitive (simplified interfaces, dictation, speech recognition, text to speech), keyboard navigation, input devices, accessing menus, accessing settings.
Identifying what operating system a digital device is using: computer, phone or mobile device, smart TVs, streaming devices, gaming consoles, wearable devices.
LO3 Understand a range of technical problems
Common computer issues: performance issues, freezing, crashes, internet connection issues, hardware failures, software compatibility issues, virus and malware infections, data loss or corruption, software configuration issues, overheating, operating system errors, battery issues, power management, and user errors.
Where to find technical advice to solve a simple technical issue: online forums, online communities, manufacturer websites, online tutorials, online guides, tech support hotlines, user manuals and documentation, search engines, social media, and local repair stores.
How to identify the need for further technological guidance: self-assessment (metacognition), skill audit, usage analysis, eficiency monitoring, feedback, support requests, adoption of new technologies, future planning, and productivity.
LO4 Be able to solve common technical problems
Resetting a password or login credentials: changing a password, requesting resets, security questions, forgotten password, forgotten login, company details.
Changing Wi-Fi settings: network, security, password, hide network, security, network management, Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS).
Following instructions to change the application or software settings: written instructions, video instructions, and audio instructions.
Accessing the control panel: keyboard shortcuts used.
Disabling an application: task manager, settings.
Uninstalling and reinstalling software: settings, permissions, administration rights, removing related files.
LO5 Be able to develop digital skills further
Following a video guide to complete a more complex digital task: selecting an appropriate video, following steps, rewinding the video, and researching sections causing difÏculty.
Following a written guide to complete a more complex digital task: selecting an appropriate guide, following steps, and researching sections causing difÏculty.
Using an advice forum to solve a more complex digital problem: verifying advice, selecting a forum, and selecting an advice page.
